It is always a great time to get a gift for mom. Birthdays, holidays, anniversaries or just because you want to show mom a little love. But! Are you giving the right gift to mom?
If you’re not familiar with the book, The Five Love Languages, I highly recommend getting a copy and reading it as soon as possible. The Five Love Languages is one of those things that was life-transforming for my marriage, children, family and friends.
My husband and I used to argue non-stop when we were first married. I suppose that’s something common in new marriages. However, if I would’ve have learned about the Love Languages ahead of time, it would have saved a lot of high-volume, low-loving conversations!
We were showing each other love, in every wrong way! I am Quality Time and Acts of Service, he is Physical Touch and Gifts. We were showing each other love based on our own Love Language. We couldn’t understand when the other didn’t respond the way we thought they should. Just a small misunderstanding.
Not only does the Love Languages apply to everyday relationships, but it’s a great resource for getting the perfect gift for someone. There are not many things more disappointing than buying the “perfect” gift for someone and their response is not what you expected.
It’s not that they did’t like it or appreciate the gift, it just wasn’t speaking their language!
Next time a holiday, birthday or anniversary comes around, use the knowledge of the Love Languages for gift giving. Gifts aren’t always a material item. Sometimes a person would prefer a walk in the park over a bouquet of flowers.
